The origin of the name of the city comes from the month of discovery and for believing that it was the mouth of a great river, when in fact it was a bay, but at that time there was no distinction between river, sacks and bays. 1st of March of 1565 the city of São Sebastião of Rio de Janeiro was founded.

On October 12, 1931, the inauguration of Christ the Redeemer statue took place and was elected in 2007 as one of the 7 wonders of the world. The Christ is 709 meters above sea level, has 8 meters of pedestal and 30 meters of height and its arms stretch by 28 meters of width.
